Introducing Melting Metropolis

Everyday Histories of Heat and Health in London, New York, and Paris, since 1945.

Brief Overview

Melting Metropolis brings together a team of scholars, a community engagement manager, and a research artist to understand better the past and present of urban heat and health.

With a focus on sensory, community, and cultural experiences in post-war London, New York, and Paris, we investigate how city dwellers have experienced heat and sought to mitigate its impact on their health and well-being. We aim to move beyond the widespread focus on “climate resilience” to uncover the multiple responses to urban heat and health during an era of climate breakdown.

Public Engagement

Our public engagement work, led by our Research Artist Bryony Ella, draws on academic and community-based research into lived experiences of heat in our cities.

We provide creative opportunities for the wider public to connect, understand, & empathise with those most directly impacted by urban heat islands.

COMMUNITY Engagement

Our Community Engagement seeks to nurture creative and conversational community movements that explore climate breakdown in community-led ways.

Working across London, Paris, and New York, the programme brings together academic research and lived experiences of heat and health to inspire grassroots designed initiatives that demand a better future.
